Symphony Space is a multi-disciplinary performing arts center where bold programming, presented in a uniquely warm and welcoming environment, forges indelible relationships between artists and audiences. Symphony Space was founded on the belief that the arts bring people together, transcend barriers, and celebrate both our similarities and differences. The center traces its history back to 1978 when the playwright and director Isaiah Sheffer and the conductor Allan Miller rented the theatre for a one-day experimental performance, Wall to Wall Bach, a free 12-hour music festival featuring audience participation. Due to the immense success of the event, Sheffer and Miller decided to lease the building and form a permanent cultural venue. Decades later, Symphony Space’s fundamental mission is to connect art, ideas, and community through their programs and their commitment to literacy and education, as well as engagement across multiple art forms and with various cultural organizations.
