On Friday, June 24 at 8pm, Queer|Art teams up with e-flux Screenig Room to present the 1999 queer cult favorite Revolutionary Girl Utena: Adolescence Apocalypse. The film, directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara and written by Yōji Enokido, is heralded as a lesbian anime classic. Protagonist Utena Tenjou, is a sharp-witted high school tomboy dueling prospective suitors of the Rose Bride. Those who betroth this eclectic new student amass the “power to revolutionize the world.” In the film, bubble-gum kitsch and camp color dark personal traumas. For Utena and the Rose Bride, their illicit love affair is a weapon that threatens patriarchal convention in the wake of gender-based violence.
After the film, join curators Daniella Brito and Dillon Rose Gardener for a discussion with Ducky Bruce Dean and Henry Rodriguez, who will reflect on the intersections of queerness, camp, and anime.
This program is curated by Daniella Brito and Dillon Rose Gardner.
