Join us on May 20 and 25 at e-flux Screening Room for Clocking Out: Time Beyond Management, a screening program co-curated by KJ Abudu, Zachary B. Feldman, Emily Small, and Johanna Thorell, the 2022-23 Helena Rubinstein Curatorial Fellows of the Whitney Independent Study Program.

The films presented as part of Clocking Out: Time Beyond Management explore ways in which notions of time are represented, lived, and contested. In our current moment where neoliberal capitalism permeates almost every sphere of life, time seems inescapably priced and paced by capital. Far from neutral, this temporal logic—embodied by the measurable, divisible, and rationalized time of the globally networked twenty-four hour clock—has become so pervasive that it masks the historical and cultural contingency of its own installment. Departing from the stance that this equally linear and progressive temporal conception structurally enables and perpetuates regimes of social, political, and economic domination, the screening program turns to filmic works that describe, defy, or propose alternatives to such hegemonic temporal orders. The title, Clocking Out: Time Beyond Management, alludes not only to the end of one’s daily labor cycle, but points to fugitive modalities of exiting a certain paradigm under which one’s time is administered through imposed regimentations, insidious imperatives to productivity, and self-inflicted time-management. By presenting both speculative, historical, and always already existing alternatives situated outside the allegedly totalizing framework of the current temporal hegemony, the films foreground the orchestration of time as a site of struggle and locus of critique.

The screening program is organized in conjunction with the exhibition Clocking Out: Time Beyond Management on view at Artists Space May 17-28, 2023.
