The State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe is a small, distinguished art academy that focuses exclusively on two degree programmes: Fine Arts (Diplom degree) and Teacher Education in Fine Arts/Intermedia Design (B.F.A./M.Ed.). Just over 300 students are taught by internationally renowned professors in a total of 16 classes, where they study painting, sculpture, graphic arts, film, photography, performance, installation and media art.

As an essential part of their studies, the classes work across semesters in spacious ateliers, which are generously spread out over four buildings. In addition, students can choose from a total of 14 specialised workshops.

Two exhibition rooms provide students with the opportunity to practise exhibiting and curating. For the degree programme in Intermedia Design, the Academy cooperates with the renowned Department of Architecture at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Thanks to an international network of partner institutions, students interested in spending a semester abroad can participate in exchange programmes.

In addition to their practical artistic studies, students gain theoretical knowledge by taking classes in the areas of art history, art theory, philosophy, didactics of art and education sciences. Furthermore they have the possibility to listen to presentations and talks lectured by invited international artists and theorists.

The Academy’s well-equipped art library provides ample opportunity for independent study. In keeping with its focus on research-oriented teaching, the Academy promotes early-stage researchers by offering them the possibility to pursue a doctorate in art history, art theory, didactics of art or education sciences.
